Effective date: October 20, 2026
These Terms apply to the Nous macOS application, the optional local MCP connector (nous-mcp) when included in your build, and the website at https://www.mindnous.me. They form an agreement between you and Long Wang, based at Hangzhou, China (“we,” “us,” or “our”).
Please read these Terms before using Nous. If you do not agree, do not install or use the application.
Mac App Store edition
The Nous edition distributed through the Mac App Store does not include the local MCP connector (nous-mcp). Sections below that describe MCP and AI connector behavior apply only to builds that ship that component.
1. Using Nous
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive license to install and use official Nous builds on Macs you own or control, for personal or professional writing.
You must use Nous lawfully and respect the rights of others. You must not use it to obtain unauthorized access to another person’s files, accounts, or systems.
Do not remove required copyright or license notices. Rights to copy, modify, or redistribute source code, fonts, and other components are governed by their applicable licenses. Public access to a source repository does not, by itself, grant additional rights.
2. Your content
You retain the rights you hold in your notes, images, and other content. We claim no ownership of that content.
You are responsible for ensuring that you may lawfully store, use, and share it. Using Nous does not require you to grant us permission to publish your notes or use them to train AI models.
3. Local files and backups
Nous stores your writing locally. You are responsible for protecting your Mac and keeping independent backups of important files.
Autosave, change history, and synchronization help protect your work, but they do not guarantee recovery from every deletion, hardware failure, software error, or action by another application.
Removing Nous may leave its data on your Mac. Deleting a note may also leave recoverable copies in local history, backups, or a connected repository.
4. Optional GitHub sync
If you enable GitHub sync, you authorize Nous to read from and write to the repository and branch you specify, using the credentials you provide.
Your repository’s visibility determines who may access its contents. A public repository can make your writing and attachments publicly accessible.
GitHub is an independent service governed by its own terms and privacy statement. Its availability, limits, and handling of stored content are outside our control. Disconnecting sync does not delete copies or history already stored on GitHub.
5. Optional AI connections
When your build includes it, Nous can provide access to saved notes through its local MCP connector. You choose whether a connection has read-only or read-and-write access.
With write access enabled, a connected client can create and update notes directly, without an additional confirmation prompt in Nous. Changes made through the connector are recorded locally for review and restoration, subject to version and conflict checks.
Local MCP does not mean local AI processing. The client and any AI service it uses may transmit, retain, or otherwise process content according to their own policies.
You are responsible for choosing clients you trust and reviewing their output. Revoking access stops subsequent requests through that authorization; it cannot recall information already received.
6. Third-party software and services
Nous includes third-party components, including fonts and software libraries. Their respective licenses apply to those components and remain in effect.
External links, repositories, AI clients, and other third-party services are governed by their own terms. These Terms do not replace those agreements or reduce rights granted by applicable third-party licenses.
7. Purchases
If Nous is offered for purchase, the price, license duration, and any renewal conditions will be disclosed before purchase. A recurring charge requires your express agreement.
Applicable statutory cancellation, refund, and consumer rights remain in effect. Any additional purchase conditions must be presented before you buy.
8. Updates and availability
We may release updates or change features as Nous develops. Compatibility and feature availability may vary by macOS version and distribution channel.
We will provide updates, support, and notices where required by applicable law or an express purchase commitment. These Terms do not permit us to remove rights you have already acquired under mandatory law.
9. Warranties and responsibility
Except for express commitments we make and rights provided by applicable law, Nous is supplied “as is” and “as available.” We do not promise that every feature will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that every conflict or data-loss event can be prevented.
To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for indirect or consequential losses arising from use of Nous. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including applicable consumer guarantees.
10. Ending use
You may stop using Nous at any time.
We may terminate the permission granted by these Terms for a material breach, subject to applicable law and any required notice or opportunity to remedy it. Termination does not transfer ownership of your content to us or authorize us to delete your local files.
11. Changes to these Terms
We will publish revised Terms with an updated effective date and provide reasonable notice of material changes. Changes apply prospectively. Where required, we will obtain your agreement before they take effect.
12. Applicable law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the People's Republic of China. Subject to mandatory law, disputes may be brought before the courts of the People's Republic of China.
If you are a consumer, this clause does not deprive you of mandatory protections or the right to use a court or dispute-resolution process available under the laws that apply where you live.
If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.
